This weekend was a museum weekend. We finally got to see the Picasso exhibit at the De Young here in SF thanks to a good friend who works there and got us tickets!
To be honest, there are a lot of Picasso pieces that I could do without. But there are some that just suck me in. Like the one below, “Painter with palette and easel”. This piece is large enough that when you stand in front of it, it engulfs your view. Staring at it long enough I found myself flipping the face from dark to light, from good to evil. Then I started to wonder why the painter’s body is made up of bars… almost like a jail. Does the painter feel constrained? For so many simple lines and shapes, it really is quite complex.
I personally haven’t painted in a while, but I love the chance to let myself be sucked in to another artist’s piece, and pretend that I’m them for a moment.
